A farm shed can do a lot of jobs. Here are the main types we build, and most properties end up with a shed that combines a few of them.
Machinery Sheds

Hay Sheds

Open-Front Farm Sheds
The workhorse of most properties. An open front gives you quick, unobstructed access for machinery, hay and vehicles, with the option to enclose one or more bays down the track.
Enclosed and Lock-Up Sheds
For tools, chemicals, feed and anything worth securing, a fully enclosed lock-up bay keeps it dry and out of reach. Plenty of farm sheds pair open bays with a lock-up section at one end.
Workshop Sheds
Add power, lighting, a concrete floor and a personal access door and you have a proper farm workshop. A mezzanine can add office or storage space overhead without taking up floor area.
Stables and Animal Shelters
A dry, sheltered space matters most for young, thin or freshly shorn stock in rough weather. Our barns also make excellent stables and shelters with room to work under cover.
Open, Enclosed, or a Combination
You do not have to choose just one. Farm sheds are built open, fully enclosed, or as a mix, and the right setup depends on what is going in.
Open-front sheds give the easiest access for machinery and hay. Enclosed lock-up sheds keep tools, feed and chemicals secure and dry. A combination, with open bays for the gear and a lock-up bay at one end, is the most popular setup because it covers both. Bay widths are flexible, with 6 metre bays common, and clear-span designs are available where you want an open floor with no internal posts in the way.
One option we offer that many do not: your shed’s dominant opening can face any direction you like, so you can set it up to suit your yard, your prevailing weather and the way you move around the property.
What to Consider When Buying a Farm Shed
A bit of planning up front saves you outgrowing the shed in a season. Worth thinking about:
- Size and bays: measure your biggest machinery and add room to move around it. It is far cheaper to add a bay at the design stage than to extend later.
- Height and clearance: tall gear like headers, spray rigs and tip trucks needs the height to match. Check the clearance through the opening, not just the shed wall height.
- Doors: wide sliding doors open a full bay for big machinery, while roller doors suit smaller openings and lock-up sections. Choose the number and placement to suit how you load.
- Wind rating: if you are in a high-wind or cyclone region, the shed has to be engineered and anchored for it. See our cyclone-rated sheds.
- Site and slab: a level, well-drained site and the right footings matter as much as the frame. You can build on an existing slab, a new one, or no slab at all. Our guide to site preparation runs through it.

Farm Shed FAQs
Do I need council approval for a farm shed?
In most cases yes. Anything past a small garden shed needs building approval, usually through a private building certifier, and planning approval can apply depending on your zoning and overlays. Rural zones often allow larger structures, but you will still need the building approval. We can help you work out what is required for your site.
Are farm sheds tax deductible?
For primary producers, often yes. A shed used to store fodder, like a hay shed, can usually be claimed in full in the year you build it, while machinery and general farm sheds are claimed as capital works over time. Always confirm your situation with your accountant or the ATO.
What size farm shed do I need?
Start with your largest machinery and add room to move around it, then allow for hay storage, a lock-up section and any future gear. As a rule, build a size up from what you think you need. We will help you work out the right span, bays and height.
Can a farm shed be insulated and powered?
Yes. Roof and wall insulation keep a workshop or office area comfortable year round, and you can add power, lighting and ventilation. Insulation also helps control the condensation that can rust tools and gear.
Open front or enclosed, which is better?
It depends on what is going in. Open-front sheds give the easiest access for machinery and hay. Enclosed lock-up sheds keep tools, chemicals and feed secure and dry. Most properties go with a combination of both.
